Deborah Drown

National Distinguished Principal Gorman Crossing Elementary School Howard County School District Laurel, Maryland

“What do we want for our children? How will we provide it? And how will we know when we’ve done it well?” Those are the three questions Debbie Drown had teachers consider at a summer retreat where they conducted strategic planning for instruction at Gorman Crossing Elementary. As founding principal of the suburban Pre-K-5 school, Drown brought its student population of 435 from two other schools. In her previous principalship at Running Brook Elementary, Drown won grants from community organizations to establish a preschool and extended-day kindergarten program for children in poverty and with limited English skills. The next year she used state funds to add the county’s first early childhood extension program. She also wrote innovative grants to establish summer programs at Running Brook that continue to provide academic support and recreation for students in need. She earned a B.S. at Frostburg State University in Maryland and an M.Ed. at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland.
