Discovering Hidden Talents

As he moves through his second year at the School of the Future, Qasan works hard and dreams big.

Playing the saxophone seems to come naturally to Qasan.

Despite the departure of principal Shirley Guenther, the chief learner of the opening year at School of the Future, Qasan is optimistic about his second year. He exudes energy and excitement, and the seriousness with which he approaches his education and his future make him seem much older than he is. Qasan is a young man with a dream, and he is not afraid to share it with the world.

Being at the School of the Future provides Qasan with opportunities that he might not have otherwise. This year, he participated in the 17th annual Blacks at Microsoft Student Minority Day, an outreach program for students from underrepresented ethnic groups. During the one-day conference, students learn about what it’s like to work for Microsoft. They participate in hands-on workshops where they learn how to use Microsoft software to support their learning.

The school’s music program, which began in February 2007, has provided another place for Qasan to discover new talents. Though not a part of his career path, jazz band gives Qasan a creative opportunity that, until now, was not a part of his school experience.

Ryan loves going to school and works hard to succeed.

For Ryan, one of the highlights of the second year is the addition of sports programs. She particularly likes playing basketball and is an asset to the school’s young team. Ryan is also growing academically, taking increasing responsibility for herself and her class work. While her enthusiasm and energy may sometimes bubble over at the wrong time, Ryan’s teachers recognize her budding leadership abilities and are helping her channel her energy in the right direction.
